 Education and Training Foundation (ETF)

The ETF is all about excellence in teaching and learning. The Society's mission is:

  • To promote the professionalism and status of those working in the post 16 education and training sector; ensuring members gain wider recognition for their expertise and practice.
  • To engage members in the active use, creation and dissemination of existing and new research into effective teaching and learning practice.
  • To bring together members into professional communities of practice through events and community networks, regional, national and online.
  • To provide CPD opportunities which are relevant and impactful, at a reasonable cost.

If you wish, you can apply to gain QTLS status via the ETFs Society for Education and Training (SET). This is a demonstration of your commitment to being a professional teacher or trainer.

The Society for Education and Training (SET)

The Society for Education and Training (SET) is part of the ETF.

They have produced Professional Standards for teachers and trainers in England, which were launched in 2014 by the Education and Training Foundation.

There are 20 standards, which are numbered for ease of reference, and which relate to three areas:

  • professional values and attributes - 6 standards aimed at developing judgement of what works and does not work in teaching and training
  • professional knowledge and understanding - 6 standards aimed at developing deep and critically informed knowledge and understanding in theory and practice
  • professional skills - 8 standards aimed at developing expertise and skills to ensure the best outcomes for learners.

If your organisation is inspected by Ofsted, they will be referring to the standards as part of their Initial Teacher Education (ITE) inspections. You can find out more by viewing the video.

You can use an online self-assessment tool to rate yourself against the Professional Standards.

An interactive map is also available to help you apply the professional standards within your job role.
